7 Ways to Spring Clean Your Mental Health
As the weather grows warmer and the days get longer, spring brings the perfect opportunity to reassess our living environments as well as our physical and mental health. Have you considered spring cleaning for your mental health?

Spring cleaning is often brought on by a desire to freshen and polish our living spaces. Coming out of the winter months makes many people feel inspired to take action to improve their lives, and there is no better way to feel better than improving their mental health

Our team at Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center is here to offer some tips on how you can refresh and renew your mental health this spring, no broom or soap required. We hope that residents of Houston, Texas, can take advantage of the motivation that spring brings.

Here are seven tips for supporting your mental health.

#1: Take advantage of the gorgeous Houston spring

Texas can be an environment shaped by extremes, as anyone who has spent a few summers here is well aware of. But we also have glorious springs when the air is just beginning to warm, and everything seems possible.

Take advantage of this beautiful weather and get outside. Mental health professionals know that spending time in nature has astounding benefits for mental health. Whether it’s a quick after-dinner walk or a planned hike, put on your shoes and get moving outside.

#2: Try some seasonal spring delicacies

You probably already know that eating a nutritious diet is a great way to support your mental health. But it’s easy to get caught up in your daily to-do list and let meal planning and healthful cooking fall by the wayside.

This spring, visit a farmer’s market and gather up some seasonal vegetables. You can make a lovely stir-fry or frittata using fresh peas, spring onions, radishes, ramps, and more. You might even find some new favorites.

#3: Declutter your mind

Who hasn’t found themselves unable to sleep because of intrusive thoughts that run through your mind at bedtime? Even during the day, consuming thoughts can interfere with your routines.

There are many ways to “declutter” your mind. Some people find it helpful to write down their thoughts to remove them from the daily playlist. Others find it beneficial to avoid the urge to multitask and prefer to tackle one thing at a time.

Once you reduce the volume of thoughts you’re juggling, there’s room for peace and calm.

#4: Clean up your digital environment

Do you suspect that you’re spending too much time scrolling social media, and that the messages you’re receiving aren’t great for your mental health? If so, you’re probably on the right track.

Social media and other digital content are designed to mimic addictive behaviors, so taking the time to really think about your consumption is a great idea.

You might find that limiting your social media consumption to a set amount of time each day leaves more room for self-care. Or you might decide to take a break from social media and other digital content altogether.

#5: Learn something new

Spring is a time of renewal, so ask yourself, when was the last time you set a goal to learn something new?

You don’t have to head back to school to reap the rewards of learning. Even something as simple as reading up on a topic that intrigues you or learning a new craft can get your mind engaged in a healthy way.

#6: Try something creative

Creativity engages your brain in ways that are different from the rest of your life. That’s why human beings are drawn to the arts, whether as creators or consumers.

A great way to boost your mental health is to find a way to express your creativity. If crafting isn’t your idea of fun, consider trying your hand at creative writing or expanding your cooking skills.

When we create something new, it lights up our brains, enhancing mental health and stability.

#7: Traditional spring cleaning

Don’t discount the mental health benefits of traditional spring cleaning. There’s something gratifying about refreshing your home.

While you’re clearing away dust bunnies and shining furniture and floors, you’ll also be stretching, bending, and otherwise getting your blood flowing.

Who doesn’t enjoy the sense of accomplishment and pride that comes with a freshly cleaned living space?
