Intellectual Disorders Q & A

What are intellectual disorders?

Intellectual disorders, also called cognitive disabilities, are a group of conditions that cause limits in learning and difficulty functioning in daily life. The disorders may develop before birth, in childhood, or in adulthood.

The Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center specialists treat intellectual disorders of all types in children and adults.

What are the signs of intellectual disorders?

Every person who has an intellectual disorder is unique because there are many different disorders, and each has different types and symptoms. In addition, the severity of symptoms varies dramatically from one person to the next. The American Psychiatric Association lists symptoms in two main categories:

Intellectual functioning

Intellectual functioning is determined through IQ testing. An IQ score of 70-75 reflects notable limits in intellectual function.

Adaptive functioning

Adaptive functioning refers to the skills needed to function day-to-day. It’s divided into three areas, with a few examples of each including:

  • Conceptual skills: Reading, writing, language, mathematics, and memory
  • Social skills: Communicating with others, making friends, and maintaining friendships
  • Practical skills: Personal grooming, job responsibilities, and organization

Intellectual disorders frequently occur alongside depression, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Studies show that people with intellectual disorders may have a higher risk of developing dementia, and at a younger age than the overall population.

How are intellectual disorders treated?

Treatment of intellectual disorders is highly customized and depends on:

  • The type of disorder
  • The areas of impairment
  • The level of impairment
  • Co-occurring disorders

The patient’s age and stage in life also play a big role in determining the ideal treatment.
