Anxiety Q & A

What are anxiety disorders?

Anxiety disorders cause excessive feelings of anxiety or fear. More than 31% of adults are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder during their lifetime.

Although anxiety disorders cause significant difficulties, treatment can relieve troublesome symptoms and provide extremely effective coping tools so you can enjoy a happy and productive life.

Some common types of anxiety disorders are:

Generalized anxiety disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) causes frequent worry that prevents you from completing your normal activities. Many people with GAD experience physical issues also, such as poor concentration, insomnia, and feeling unusually on edge.

Panic disorder

Panic disorder causes frightening panic attacks, which merge psychological distress and physical symptoms like trembling, chest pain, breathing difficulties, and heart palpitations.

Social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder involves severe anxiety and discomfort around social situations. Ordinary interactions, like eating at a restaurant or going on a date, may seem impossible with social anxiety disorder.

Is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) an anxiety disorder?

No, OCD isn’t an anxiety disorder, although the American Psychiatric Association once classified it as one. Today, OCD and related disorders have a separate category for diagnostic purposes.

With OCD, intrusive thoughts trigger anxiety, and compulsive behaviors are the result of trying to dispel the anxiety. With anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder, it’s common to experience anxiety but not feel compelled to perform rituals or other behaviors as a result.

Another reason that OCD isn’t an anxiety disorder is that while OCD-related anxiety can cause mental and sometimes physical symptoms, those physical symptoms aren’t a diagnostic criteria. However, with anxiety disorders, those physical symptoms are expected.

How are anxiety disorders treated?

Anxiety disorder treatment depends on your disorder, symptoms, and other factors specific to you. Also, treatment may vary based on whether you have other mental health disorders. For example, anxiety often occurs with depression.

Medication can be very helpful for anxiety disorders. It minimizes symptoms and helps you feel more comfortable. Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center also provides ongoing supportive therapy, which teaches you effective coping mechanisms and lifestyle changes to further reduce your anxiety.

With medication management and supportive therapy, you can manage your anxiety disorder and live without constant fear and nervousness. Your initial evaluation takes place in the office, but after that, you can opt for telehealth appointments.
