Summer is here, and warmer weather combined with vacation vibes makes the perfect setting to focus on protecting and strengthening your mental health. These tips can help you feel and function better as the temperatures climb.

Everyone has heard of the winter blues. If you experience a decline in mood and energy as the weather chills, this summer offers an excellent opportunity to take charge of preserving and enhancing your mental health and wellness.

At Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center, we are committed to helping members of the Houston, Texas, community take a proactive approach to their mental health. We hope this information inspires you to find ways to enhance your mental health while enjoying the warm weather and, hopefully, some downtime with friends and family.

Take time to reflect on and assess your mental health

Have you been going through a challenging period at home or work? Are you finding it harder to bounce back after life’s challenges?

Everyone experiences shifts in their mental and emotional health. One of the most powerful ways to keep yourself stable and satisfied is to take the time to periodically review how you’re feeling and functioning.

Life happens fast, and we don’t always set aside time to check in with ourselves. Consider taking some time to think about how you’re managing your current circumstances and to determine if there are areas where you’d like to improve.

It doesn’t have to be a scheduled appointment (although there’s nothing wrong with penciling in reflective time). You can simply incorporate a self-check during normal routines, like an after-dinner walk or as you wind down before bed. Having an understanding of where you stand empowers you to chart a course for improvement.

Sleep quality is a great place to start

Your body and mind need plenty of restful sleep to repair and recharge. In fact, sleep deprivation can have a direct negative impact on your mental health.

If you feel like you’re not getting enough rest, or if you find yourself tired or fatigued early in the day, enhancing your sleep quality can bring dramatic improvement. In some cases, improving sleep quality is as easy as creating and sticking to a schedule of when you’ll go to bed and when you’ll arise.

Many people find it helpful to change aspects of their sleep environment and nighttime routines. This is widely known as “sleep hygiene” and may include practices such as finding the right pillow, blocking out morning light, adjusting the bedroom temperature, and avoiding TV and device use close to bedtime.

Getting into the right mindset

While the phrase “it’s all in your head” is usually used to dismiss an individual’s symptoms and experience of mental health issues, it’s true that your mindset can have a dramatic impact on your overall mental health.

There are several ways to intentionally cultivate a positive and happy mindset. One example is practicing gratitude, whether that means taking some time out of a busy week to reflect on all the things you have to be grateful for or keeping a written journal of a single thing that inspires gratitude each day.

Another way to strengthen your mental health is by building and maintaining solid bonds with other people. Humans are social creatures, and we thrive when we have meaningful relationships with others. Consider taking some time to reach out to friends and loved ones, expand your social circle, or give back to your community through charitable work.
