The holidays can be such a joyful time, but they can also bring on significant stress for many residents of Houston, Texas. At Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center, we are a trusted mental health resource for those in our care.
Offering guidance on how to navigate stress during the holidays is just one way we hope to make your life better and to give you the space you need to enjoy this holiday season to the fullest.
The holidays mean different things to different people. What is absolutely essential to one person might be insignificant to another.
That means the best way to create a plan for managing stress during the holidays is by taking some time to think about what aspects of the season are most meaningful for you.
Maybe it’s time spent with friends and family or maintaining traditions that run back generations. Perhaps you find joy in embracing the religious aspects of the holidays or in giving back to your community through volunteer work.
Many people use the holidays as a welcome break from their normal day-to-day lives and relish tasks like decorating, baking treats, and shopping for or wrapping presents. Take some time to create a list of what means the most to you.
There are so many things to see and do during the holiday season. It can be difficult to prioritize which events and activities matter the most. But one thing is clear: trying to fit too many things into your schedule is only going to lead to increased stress.
When creating your schedule, begin with those events that bring the most enjoyment.
When it comes to activities or events you “can’t get out of,” give some thought to just how unavoidable they really are. It’s possible that you have more leeway in saying “no” than you might think.
Plan for downtime as you create your schedule. Make time to spend with those you’re closest to, and don’t feel bad about setting aside time for yourself. Recharging is critical during busy times.
One of the most significant sources of stress during the holidays is the belief that everything must be perfect or align with how it was in previous years. But each holiday season is shaped by the circumstances that the year brings.
It isn’t possible for everything to be perfect, and it isn’t healthy to spend too much time striving for perfection. For most families, spending time together is the most important and meaningful part of the holiday season.
So, don’t allow yourself to get caught up in the stress of finding the perfect tree, creating the perfect outdoor lighting scene, or cooking a holiday feast from scratch.
Instead, choose the things about the holidays that matter most to you and yours, and focus your efforts within that scope.
Also, be open to the laughter, memories, and adventures that happen when imperfection factors in. You never know when a new family tradition might arise!
We’re living in a time of serious division, and events around the world can be distressing.
While it’s easy to get caught up in debate and argument over things you care about, remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and they can channel their efforts in a way that’s meaningful to them.
For most, intentionally avoiding topics likely to provoke arguments is a good way to keep stress levels down. If a friend or family member seems intent on advancing a contentious conversation, you might have to be firm about your desire to steer clear of volatile topics.
It can also be helpful to redirect the conversation to shared happy memories or topics that you know everyone can agree upon. Talk about your travels this year or your goals for next year.
Keeping the focus on family bonds and friendship will often remind everyone of why they chose to gather together rather than the things they disagree on.
