Taking Control of Your Mental Health: Why a Whole-Person Approach Matters
Despite a growing body of evidence to the contrary, many people continue to view mental health and physical health as distinctly different areas of focus. Here’s why we take a whole-person approach to balancing the two.

Mental health is enjoying quite a bit of attention in recent years, but not all of the focus is backed by the latest research. What we know about mental health has shifted, and the future of mental health care is brighter than ever.

Part of that positivity lies in taking a whole-person approach to managing mental health and wellness. This is an area of specialty for our team at Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center, and a valuable resource for the community of Houston, Texas.

Here’s what you need to know about how a whole-person approach works and the benefits it can bring.

The basics of whole-person health

At the center of a whole-person view of health and wellness is the understanding that all aspects of an individual’s health are interconnected. This includes the following:

  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Emotional health
  • Spiritual health
  • Community health

Whole-person health can also be viewed as part of holistic health, another approach that acknowledges the interconnectivity of all aspects of human life. It’s also viewed as an approach that delivers care under the framework of mental and physical health being linked.

A practice that embraces whole-person care also acknowledges that each individual brings a unique mix of strengths, challenges, and experiences to their daily existence. Some of the things that can influence a person’s overall health and wellness include:

  • Biological makeup
  • Outlook on life
  • Past trauma
  • Stress levels
  • Activity levels
  • Nutrition
  • Education (including learning done outside of traditional academia)
  • Upbringing
  • Previous mental health support

Approaching each person as an individual with unique needs can create mental health care that is customized to yield powerful results.

What does a whole-person approach look like?

The foundation of the whole-person approach is a process where we truly get to know you by understanding your background and where your strengths and challenges lie. Getting a complete health history, including both physical and mental health, is important.

It’s also essential to learn what kinds of resources you bring to the process. For example, some people enter mental health care with a strong social network, healthy family relationships, or a supportive partner. Others enter with few or none of these resources.

Your willingness to find solutions and to try new treatments and techniques is also important.

Whole-person health involves looking at mental health challenges in the framework of your current circumstances, including any physical health issues you might be facing.

People who are living with chronic illnesses often experience mental health issues as a result. Improving their physical symptoms can help ease mental issues like depression and anxiety
