Must-Dos This Summer to Support Your Mental Health
Summer is in full swing and provides a great opportunity to refocus on mental health. If you’re looking for ways to boost your mental health this summer, we have some ideas. Keep reading to learn more!

Lifespan Psychiatry & Wellness Center is a valuable resource for the greater Houston, Texas, community. We provide personalized mental health support to people of all ages, giving you the skills you need to thrive.

As summer begins, let’s talk about some ways you can prioritize your mental health this year.

#1: Create and maintain a sleep schedule

Summer can bring changes to routine, and many of them are wonderful. But your body and brain need rest to thrive, and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is a big part of that.

One way to enhance your sleep quality is by aligning your sleep schedule with the sun. We’re not saying you need to head to bed as soon as the last light fades from the sky, but shifting your sleep schedule to earlier bedtimes and waking times can really do wonders.

#2: Stay active

No one wants to head outside in the heat of summer, but finding ways to stay physically active is an important part of maintaining or enhancing mental health. Consider shaping your routines to allow for walks early in the day or in the evening hours.

You might also look into indoor activities that avoid the heat of summer. You don’t have to sign up for a gym membership. Instead, there are classes and activities that don’t require a lengthy time or financial commitment.

#3: Spend some time in the sun

While too much sun exposure carries risks, the human body needs to spend a portion of time outdoors to thrive. An example is in vitamin D production, which happens within your body and requires small volumes of sun exposure.

If you’re limiting your time in the sun, wearing sunscreen on exposed skin, and taking steps to minimize sun exposure in your daily life, there’s nothing wrong with soaking in some rays this year. Just don’t do it when the sun is at its highest (from 10am to 2pm).

#4: Try something new

New experiences keep us mentally sharp and resilient. Look for a new hobby this summer that provides the chance to sharpen a skill or learn something completely new. If your life is already hectic and feels overscheduled, you might want to pursue this new activity on your own.

But if you crave time with friends or want to connect more deeply with your partner or kids, think about including them in your new pursuit.

#5: Service to others

We know how challenging it can be to fit another thing into an already busy schedule. But setting aside some time to volunteer or work within your community has so many benefits for you and those you serve.

There are endless ways to contribute, whether it’s helping with food insecurity or reading out loud to kids through a school or library program.

Find something that speaks to you.
